This is a nicely matted and framed print made from a sketch by Leslie’s “special artist” W.T. Crane and is the last of three done by him that General Gilmore included in his official reports of his operations at Charleston. This joined sketches made on August 21 and 23 to show the progress made in leveling the remains of Fort Sumter, and was made, like the Aug. 23 sketch, “from Beacon House on Morris Island.” It bears a facsimile signature of Gilmore at lower right marking it as “official” and thus guaranteeing its accuracy for the public in this published version by Washington engraver and lithographer J.F. Gedney.
The condition is very good and this displays very well with just minor foxing. The frame measures 21 ¼” x 17 ½”, while the visible portion of the print measures 12 ½” x 8”.
Crane was a talented artist, with Leslie’s publishing more than 200 of his sketches during the war. A view of a gradually demolished fort might seem an odd choice for publication, but as seized federal property and the starting point for the war it was a sore point as long as in Confederate hands.
