Beautiful 19th century, possibly as early as 1820s, wooden cased pocket compass in excellent working condition. The compass housing is set inside a wood case and topped with a metal ring. The cover features two brass hooks, and two brass hinges.

The needle is blue and features the letter "S" and "N" painted on each end. The base paper remains in excellent condition. The index pointer shows a fleur-de-lis instead of an "N" for North; South, East, and West are spelled out. Many additional intermediate directions are in each quadrant. Outer most ring shows degrees.  Has brass transit lock that is activated when the lid is closed.

Wood box measures approximately 3” x 3” x ¾” overall (closed).  Compass is 2 ½” in diameter.

A nearly identical compass is in the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society and was used by Lieutenant Colonel William Rainey Marshall of the Seventh Minnesota Infantry during the Civil War.  [jet]
