Portrait is by the E. C. Middleton Company of Cincinnati, Ohio and is so marked and dated 1865 on the reverse. Measures 14” x 17”.
These “oil portraits,” are also called “oleographs.” This was a process where the prints were produced by chromolithography using oil based inks, printing the images on paper and then mounting them on canvas. These were specifically intended to duplicate the appearance of oil paintings. This is a process which Middleton pioneered in America and which would later be copied successfully by Louis Prang. These are among the finest American portrait prints of the nineteenth century.
Mrs. Sherman wrote to Middleton about this print saying “I am happy to inform you that I regard your portrait of Gen. Sherman an excellent likeness and a beautiful work of Art.”
Item is in overall excellent condition with no punctures to the print or the canvas and only the smallest amount of surface wear.
These originally came framed and ready to hang. Once this is back in a frame it will be a plus to any display. [ad]
