These two prints were no doubt manufactured and sold as a pair when they were produced by the Sherman Publishing Company of New York in 1884.
The first of the set is titled “FAMOUS UNION COMMANDERS OF THE CIVIL WAR 1861-’65.” Framed the print meas. approx. 31.50 inches long x 25.00 inches wide. The frame is made of natural finish wood with a painted gold interior border.
The print has three rows of what look like CDV’s with color bust views of the leading Union Generals. The first row has Thomas, Kearney, Burnside, Hooker, Logan, Meade and McClellan. The middle row has McDowell, Banks, Sheridan, Grant, Sherman, Rosecrans and Sickles. The third row has Farragut, Pope, Butler, Hancock Sedgwick and Porter.
The companion piece has matching dimensions and frame but this one is titled “FAMOUS CONFEDERATE COMMANDERS OF THE CIVIL WAR 1861-’65.” The arrangement is the same as the Union version but this one depicts in the first row Hood, Hill, A.S. Johnston, Ewell, Longstreet, Hardee and Price. The second row has Stuart, Beauregard, Jackson, Lee, J. Johnston, Fitzhugh Lee and Bragg. The third row has Early, Rhodes, Polk, Hampton, Kirby Smith and Raphael Semmes.
Both prints are in good solid condition but due show discoloration from age. There is some water staining on both along the bottom edges with some minor creases. The pieces should be removed and cleaned between the print and glass as some dirt and dust has accumulated over the years.
These really are wonderful early prints that hung for years and years in the well-known Lee’s Headquarters Museum just west of Gettysburg.
