This is a half sheet of blue paper completed in ink. Dated 7/31/1862, it is a simple requisition for clothing for Company “I” of the 42nd Virginia Infantry. Signed twice by “R.W. Withers”.
Robert Woodson Withers was born January 18, 1835, at Ivanhoe Plantation, Campbell County Virginia. Attended Piedmont Institute in Liberty Virginia, and was a farmer prior to the war. He was a Captain in Virginia State Militia. During the Civil War he enlisted as a Private in Company “I” 42nd Virginia Infantry Regiment in June of 1861; promoted to Orderly Sergeant and then 1st Lieutenant in September. Captain in April of 1862; Lt. Colonel in November. Wounded at Gettysburg during attacks on Culp’s Hill on July 2. Promoted to Colonel February 11, 1864. Wounded in hand at the Battle of North Anna. Advanced on Washington, DC. Seriously wounded (in lung) during Battle of Shepherdstown August 25, 1864 and captured. Sent to Point Lookout until paroled on May 27, 1865. After the war he was a merchant, farmer, and Deputy Sheriff in Virginia. He died November 14, 1896, and is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, Virginia. [jet][ph:L]
