Major General Joe Wheeler, CSA, was a 1859 West Point graduate who served two years with the Mounted Dragoons on the western frontier before resigning from the U.S. Army to join the Confederacy. Wheeler led an infantry regiment through the Battle of Shiloh, and then took command of the Cavalry of the Army of Mississippi. He commanded the cavalry in the western theater through the end of the war, rising to Brigadier , and then to Major General. In campaigning, Wheeler's Cavalry covered Braxton Bragg advance and retreat from Kentucky, fought at Stone's River and Chickamauga, and bottled up Maj. Gen. W. Rosecrans forces in Chattanooga with a masterly executed raid on Union communications. Wheeler's were practically the only troops opposing Sherman's March to the Sea. In the post-war phase Wheeler entered politics and served in the U.S. House of Representatives between 1885-1900. During the Spanish American War he commanded a cavalry division in Cuba and was later commissioned a Brigadier General in the Regular Army, and sent briefly to the Philippines.
This set of orders for Wheeler's Confederate cavalry corps is scarce, and a must piece for western Confederate cavalry buffs. [jp ][ph:L]
