These orders were issued to Pennsylvania Reserves brigade quartermasters and regimental surgeons on the eve of McClellan’s 1862 Peninsula Campaign, kicking off near Williamsburg, VA, in early May 182. Text:
“Special Orders….. The Quarter Masters of each Brigade will furnish the Surgeon of each Regiment in the Brigade with a box of the following dimensions (Outside dimensions 23 inches long, 12 inches high, and 12 inches wide.
The surgeon of each Regiment will place in said box a suitable quantity of lint, roller, & dressings for ready use in time of action, and will deliver the same to the Brigade Surgeon, that he maty place the same in the transport cart at head Quarters of each Brigade.
The Quarter Master of each Brigade will likewise furnish the transport cart with a box capable of being well secured to which each regimental surgeon will contribute such amount of drugs and, simultaneously; as the Brigade surgeon direct and deem necessary in the field.
Each box will be marked with the number of the Regiment from which its contents are procured. The Surgeons Orderly will carry on each march hereafter the condensed field or operating case of the Surgeon. The number of the Regiment or name of the Brigade Surgeon as the case may be, must be distinctly marked on each case. The acting Division Quarter Mater will furnish the Surgeons of the 1st Regiment of the Artillery, and Cavalry, and the Transport cart at Division Head Quarters with boxes of similar description as above.
