“AMNESTY OATH:

I, Matthew Pilson of Augusta Co., VA…do solemnly swear, in the presence of ALMIGHTY GOD, THAT I WILL HENCEFORTH FAITHFULLY FULLY SUPPORT, PROTECT AND DEFEND THE Constitution of the United States thereunder, and that I will, in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the emancipation of slaves, so help me God / (sgnd. Matthew Pilson) / Sworn to and subscribed before me, 10th day of July 1865 /J.C. Wheat Notary Public / I certify that the above is a true copy of C. Wheat / Notary Public.”

Matthew Pilson was born on 30 November 1799. He was the son of George Pilson and Elizabeth Thomson. He was a farmer who resided in Augusta County, Virginia. On 5 November 1834, he married Lavinia Finley (1810-1882). They had thirteen children; two of his sons served in the 1st Virginia Cavalry. He died on 30 March 1891 and is buried in the family cemetery in Augusta County, at the age of 91.
