This pair of documents involve Mr. Phillip C. Booe of Marengo County, Alabama.

The first document meas. approx. 6.75 x 5.00 inches, is pre-printed and filled out in legible ink. It reads:

ENROLLING OFFICE, DALLAS COUNTY

SELMA, ALA., MAY 26^TH 1864

SPECIAL ORDERS, NO.

PHILLIP BOOE OF GREEN CO. ALA IS HEREBY ORDERED TO PROCEED WITHOUT DELAY TO GREEN CO TO REPORT TO THE EN. OFFICER OF SAID COUNTY AND IF FOUND OFF THE ROUTE, OR LOITERING ON THE WAY, WILL BE ARRESTED AND TREATED AS A DESERTER.

E. T. STARKE, CAPT. & ENROLLING OFFICER.

The document is in nice condition but does have a water stain line running down the center from top to bottom. Despite the stain the document is completely legible. Records show that the Captain who signed the form was Edwin T. Starke of Company B, 6^th Missouri Infantry which did serve in the Department of Alabama in 1864.

The second document is an oath of allegiance. Again, it is pre-printed and filled in with ink. It reads,

OATH OF ALLEGIANCE AND AMNESTY

STATE OF ALABAMA

MARENGO COUNTY

I, PHILLIP C. BOOE DO SOLEMNLY SWEAR THAT I WILL HENCEFORTH FAITHFULLY SUPPORT, PROTECT AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES, AND THE UNION OF STATES THEREUNDER; AND THAT I WILL, IN LIKE MANNER, ABIDE BY AND SUPPORT ALL LAWS AND PROCLAMATIONS WHICH HAVE BEEN MADE DURING THE EXISTING REBELLION WITH REFERENCE TO THE EMANCIPATION OF SLAVES SO HELP ME GOD.

SWORN TO AND SUBSCRIBED BEFORE ME, THIS 31^ST DAY OF AUGUST 1865-PHILLIP C. BOOE

The subject of these two documents, Phillip C. Booe was born in Rowen County, North Carolina on May 26, 1817. Being 47 years old in 1864 he was liable for conscription and was ordered to enroll. There is no record of him having ever served in the Confederate army but it is clear that he obviously took the Oath of Allegiance in 1865. He died on February 16, 1902 in Marengo County, Alabama and is buried there in Gilfield Cemetery in Demopolis.
