Pair of handwritten documents housed in a modern, 14” x 27” frame. Accompanied in frame by typewritten transcription of each.
The first document is dated “Headquarters U.S. Forces / Heathsville, VA. May 31, 1865”. Signed by the Captain of the 1st New York Mounted Rifles/Provost Marshall, he certifies that Samuel Lewis “of Northumberland Co. Va., has taken this personal Oath of Allegiance to the United States Govt, before me this 31 day of May 1865”. Measures 7 ½” x 5 ½”, with minor soiling, fold lines, and a small amount of paper loss along the bottom edge.
The second document measures 7 ½” x 4”, also with fold lines and a small amount of paper loss and soiling. Dated “Office P. Marshall / Heathsville City 15th 1865” and signed by “Capt. & Prov Marshall”, who indicates that he has “Received of S. Lewis one Springfield Rifle property of the United States”.
Not much is known about Lewis; he enlisted on July 24, 1861 at Heathsville, VA and was mustered into Co. A, 37th Virginia Militia. Accompanied by a small amount of internet research material; further research is certainly a possibility. [ld] [ph:L]
