What makes this political poster so unusual is not that it is a satirical slam at the man who ran against Lincoln in the 1864 Presidential election, but the fact that it was printed AFTER Lincoln won the election. It was not intended to influence the outcome of the election, but rather Lincoln's backers were seeking revenge against McClellan for bragging that he would be the victor and win the Presidency. It also portrays the General as wanting to compromise with the South, while showing the brutality of the Southern plantation masters on their Slaves. At one point before the election McClellan had an opportunity to beat Lincoln as people were fed up with the War, but Sherman's Atlanta victory helped revitalize public sentiment toward a military vs. compromise solution.
