Titled, “Map of the City of Washington: Established as the Permanent Seat of Government of the United States of America 1864,” this foldout map of Washington, D.C. features street names and block numbers and has a key at the top to locate public buildings, banks, hotels, and fire companies, as well as masonic and odd fellows lodges, numerous churches and several burying grounds, so your interests are covered. The publisher is C. Bonn, and the map itself has an 1858 copyright date at lower left.

The condition is excellent, with expected folds, no tears, a few small smudges and no foxing. It is still securely attached to its book-like casing, with the title blind stamped in gold on the pebbled leather cover.

This is a very nice contemporary map of Washington as the Civil War soldiers who thronged it would have seen it and would tie in nicely with contemporary diaries and letters of soldiers who spent a lot of time describing the sights to the folks back home. It makes a nice study piece and would also go well with the typical personal effects of an officer assigned to the eastern theatre of war, most of whom passed through Washington at one point or another.  [sr]
