A nice personal grouping in the form of three cancelled postal covers personally written in the hand of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, Colonel of the 20th Maine and recipient of the Medal of Honor.
The covers are addressed to the Chamberlain’s wife “Fanny”, (Mrs. J. L. Chamberlain); his daughter “Daisy” (Miss. Grace D. Chamberlain); and to his son Harold (H. W. Chamberlain), all in Brunswick, ME.
Each is written in the distinctive hand of the man who received Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s sword at Appomattox.
Though tattered where opened by the recipient, the three covers will display together nicely. [ld]
