TEN DOLLAR CONFEDERATE RICHMOND NOTE – DATED 1864 WITH UNIQUE CAMPAIGN STAMPING ON REVERSE

Item Code: 1202-274

This colorful note was the last $10 note issued by the Confederacy. The front features a popular vignette of a stampeding horse-drawn artillery caisson alongside Confederate Cabinet member Robert M.T. Hunter. The back of the note displays its ten-dollar denomination in large, bold letters. The note has been hand-signed and features a date of February 17, 1864.  The number appears to be 31646 on either side of the vignette.  A slightly offset cut shows the bottom edge of the next bill on the original sheet and off-center graphics and text on front and back.

The reverse shows a blue geometric pattern with a bold “10” in each corner and bold font “TEN” in 3 places at center.  Stamped in red are the remnants of an 1888 political campaign for Commissioner of the Revenue of Richmond – doubtless a cost-effective and memorable way to repurpose a note with no monetary value. The stamping reads “Presented by CAPT. C. F. JOHNSTON, CANDIDATE FOR Commissioner of the Revenue, CITY OF RICHMOND, VA. Democratic Primary, April 19th, 1888. He will be glad to have your Vote.”

The note measures 7” x 3.1” and shows very minor tearing and slight wear along the bottom edge.

A unique Confederate note with multiple layers of history.  [cm][ph:L]
