This is a neat bond with a very cool connection. This is a very nice authentic Confederate States of America $1,000.00 savings bond certificate. It was authorized to be printed by the Act of Confederate Congress that was approved on February 17th 1864 and is so marked in the upper right hand corner. This is the style that has the peaceful scene at the left of the top that shows a man walking over a small bridge. This is the style listed as CR-154 in the Confederate bond book by Criswell and as #366 in Ball’s book on Confederate bonds. This one was entered, signed, recorded and dated from July 20th 1864.
What makes this one special is who it was issued to. It has the ink notation that it was issued to J. R. Anderson & Co. That is the company that ran the famous Tredegar Foundry in Richmond, VA. Joseph Reid Anderson owned the foundry that produced Confederate cannon as well as the Confederate artillery shells themselves. Anderson also served as a Confederate general during the war. These bonds were utilized towards the end of the war when money was scarce and so many of them were never sold.
The certificate measures approximately 9 ¼” x 7” in overall size. On the reverse it indicates that Anderson transferred the bond to the Bank of the Commonwealth (Virginia). The bond displays beautifully with a couple of spots of paper loss to the acidity of the ink they used. This will make a fine display as it is or even better if nicely framed. [ph:L]
