Federal soldier George Wilson, 21st Missouri Infantry (US), captured this cap at the Fort Blakely fight near Mobile, Alabama April 9th, 1865.  The cap appears to have been mass produced at a clothing depot and this depot used a distinctive light weight black woolen cloth.  The cap has a functioning leather chinstrap but only half the strap left. It is not torn but the female adjustable half is gone. One brass floral button is intact holding the strap in place. There is a heavy fold under the interior edge of the visor seamline. It has a lightweight crown lining. The lining in the sides is a fabric that may be fine unbleached linen.  The enameled cloth sweatband has an unfinished bottom edge that is whipstitched in place.  The top edge of the one-and-a-half inch, finished width sweatband is not secured to the lining, but has a quarter inch inward fold all around. The 2 1/4-inch oil cloth trimmed oil cloth over cardboard visor is blackened and lacquered. The cap is slightly more than three inches high. The entire cap is hand sewn. The overall condition is excellent, in fact better than most with a few minor moth nips and wear spots. This cap was purchased directly from the descendants of George Wilson. And there 2 original discharge documents relating to this soldier. One he has written notes on relating his campaign service. The 21st Missouri was a hard fighting unit.

The cap was sold to Mr. Ray Ritchey and was an important addition to his now closed Texas Civil War Museum. This is an outstanding example of a Confederate, yet to be identified, clothing depot made enlisted man's cap captured at one of the final desperate stands of the Confederate Army.
