This is a US cavalry officer’s coat button as worn on their uniforms during the Civil War. The brass device is a convex shaped, 2-pc button that measures 20mm. Its gold gilt finish is 90% present and bright. There is some discoloration around the tip of the left wing. Block letter “C” is seen within the eagle’s shield device on the button face.
On reverse the backmark is crisp and clear and reads “SCOVILLE MFG CO/ WATERBURY, CT.” Founded in 1802 the Scoville Manufacturing Company specialized in buttons and sewing hardware, and is still in production today. The shank is intact, is strong and tight. [MC] [ph:L]
