This is a one-piece Virginia state seal coat button accompanied with a pen and ink label. The label reads, “Button taken from the coat of a Rebel Colonel at the taking of Richmond Va. 1865.” Paper label also has old (undated) newsprint pasted to the back. There is a small hole in label where it was mounted to the button shank. Hole has small, loose, chip of paper present likely from people pushing and pulling button from paper.
Virginia button features Virtus slaying the tyrant. The backmark is “SUPERIOR / (star) QUALITY (star)” between two rings of dots. The shank remains perfectly straight. This is an 1830s era English-made button. Measures 21mm. Reference: Albert VA02, Tice VA105.
Button shows very nice age-appropriate mellow patina. Paper label is in very good condition save the small hole for button shank. [jet] [ph:L]
