This is a non-dug Confederate Infantry button. A large, fancy manuscript letter “I” is centered on the face. Coat size. English wartime manufacture by Halfmann & Taylor. The backmark reads: "HALFMANN & TAYLOR / (dot) MONTGOMERY (dot) / ALABAMD". "Alabama" is not actually misspelled, this was a common English convention of the time.
There is a shallow “push” in the center of the face and the shank is slightly bent. Otherwise, this is a clean and attractive Confederate import button. [jet]
