This non-excavated artifact is an outstanding example of a Confederate local Block “A” brass button as worn on Southern enlistedman’s artillery uniforms. The coat-size artillery button is of two-piece construction with an edge bordered brass face, a tin back and all in fantastic condition. Classed as a ‘CS 117A / RV 35’ in A.H. Albert’s reference volume, this fine, circular, 23-mm brass specimen exhibits a Roman block letter “A” displayed upon the plain background with a smooth shiny patina. Button is tin backed and has a fine strong shank. No maker’s mark. This block “A” specimen is in excellent condition overall with just one tiny old edge nick at the five o’clock position. A fine, original Confederate uniform local block “A” button. These are extremely difficult to find on the market today. Would enhance any Civil War button collection. [ra]
