A small pressed glass plate by an unknown American artist from Sandwich, MA. A similar example is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Measures approx. 3 ¼” in diameter.  Overall very good condition, no visible chips or cracks. One small area of white discoloration to the right of the bust of Harrison; at first it appeared to be residue of a sticker/tag but may be inside the glass itself.

Cup plate bears the inscription “GEN. W.H. HARRISON / BORN FEB 9, 1773”.

William Henry Harrison (February 9, 1773 – April 4, 1841) was an American military officer and politician who served as the ninth president of the United States from March 4 to April 4, 1841, the shortest presidency in U.S. history. He was also the first U.S. president to die in office, causing a brief constitutional crisis since presidential succession was not then fully defined in the U.S. Constitution. Harrison was the last president born as a British subject in the Thirteen Colonies and was the grandfather of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd U.S. president.

A cup plate is a small, decorative plate used to hold a cup after a hot beverage has been poured into a saucer for cooling and drinking. Between 1825 and 1865, it was fashionable to drink from saucers, and cups were placed on cup plates to prevent staining the tablecloth. [ld][ph:L]
