Small pocket sized hymn book meas. approx. 2.75 inches x 4.25 inches and runs 96 pages. Paper cover shows some moderate wear but has a nice label with US flag and “HYMN BOOK FOR THE ARMY AND NAVY” printed on it. The label also states that it was published by the American Tract Society. The back cover has another label on it that reads “PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES CHRISITIAN COMMISSION.” This label also shows some wear. The inside front page has a period inscription in pencil that reads “PETER MATHIUS. THIS IS THE PROPERTY OF PETER MATHIUS PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES CHRISTIAN COMMISSION.” At this time it is not known which regiment Peter Mathius served with.
