Gilt stamped on the spine, “LOW’S RAILWAY DIRECTORY 1862” this handy little 1862 directory also bears on its front cover the gilt blind-stamped marking, “ADAM’S EXPRESS COMPANY / EASTERN WESTERN & SOUTHERN / EXPRESS FORWARDERS” perhaps indicating it was supplied by that company to its various offices for calculating routes, mileage and cost of shipments. The company would have been extremely familiar to Civil War officers and soldiers sending or receiving packages or registered letters from home, receipts for which are often found in Civil War soldiers.
The book is in excellent condition, 140 pages long, including an index, advertisement from the printer and a seven-page price list from Low’s and Holt’s, Railroad, Steamship and Telegraph Suppliers at the end. It is mainly a list of railroad companies, their corporate officers and directors, but includes potentially useful details such as the beginning and end points of their main lines and branches and mileage. The majority of the listings are US listings for the northern states and some Canadian lines, but there is also a 3-page listing of southern railroads from the “latest information available” including name of the line, its beginning and end point, mileage, and location of office, with the name of the company president and superintendent.
This would be a great addition to the collection of a railroad collector or aficionado and, needless to say, railroads were key in military transportation and supply and played a critical role in the strategic planning of both sides in the Civil War, so the book might perhaps also might have been found on the table of a Union or Confederate raider planning some mayhem.
