The title of this volume is “INSTRUCTION FOR FIELD ARTILLERY: PREPARED BY A BOARD OF OFFICERS.” The manual was written in 1859 by then Brevet Major William H. French, Captain William F. Barry and Brevet Major Henry J. Hunt and published by J. B. Lippincott & Co of Philadelphia in 1862.
Volume meas. approx. 5.3” x 8” and is bound in a pebbled brown cloth with an eagle perched on a shield and crossed cannons embossed front and back. Title in gold on the spine. Covers and spine show light corner and edge wear and the title has faded some. A light water stain carries through the first 81 pages at upper right but does not detract from the readability or attractiveness of the old printing.
Interior is clean and runs 348 pages with 88 plates showing movements and organization of field artillery units as well as bugle calls and various charts.
A very collectible piece of Civil War instruction for the Artillery enthusiast. [cm][ph:L]
