This very rare booklet was published to accompany the February 22, 1864 exhibition of flags, war trophies, and relics placed on public display in Albany, New York. Its purpose was to provide attendees with a detailed and numbered catalogue that described the items on display.
The Bureau of Military Statistics presented the collection, and all proceeds from the sale of these booklets benefited the US Sanitary Commission. This copy is one of the second editions with enlarged print and was published by Weed, Parsons, and Company of Albany.
Items on display at this exhibition included captured flags, swords, weapons, and relics from battlefields including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Port Hudson, Vicksburg, and most battlefields between. Singular items like the service items on Elmer Ellsworth’s person when he was killed in 1861, experimental artillery rounds, and items seized from ships attempting to run the Union blockade of southern ports. A total of 541 items are listed and described – there were likely more but the rear cover and possibly a few pages are missing.
The booklet measures 9” x 5.75” and most pages are in a nice condition, with all text very readable and complete. As mentioned, the rear cover is missing – likely along with several pages after page 56. The last item listed is the door lock that secured John Brown’s jail cell door as he awaited trial and execution.
This is a fascinating item that paints quite a picture of what the attendees were able to view at the event. Very seldom are copies found outside of reprints and this is a truly scarce opportunity to own one of the originals. [cm][ph:L]
