This pocket-sized book, published in 1845 by Henry F. Anners of Philadelphia, contains the established rules and practices of the antebellum period for many popular and obscure games from Whist to Golf.
This American Edition comes to us in a nice condition with very minimal wear. The embossed cover shows no damage and only minor wear at each corner. It features an embossed cornucopia overflowing with game pieces and accessories, bordered by the words “HOYLE’S GAMES IMPROVED”. A simple rectangular border design approaches the edge with playing cards at each corner. All binding is tight and the spine features a beautiful, embossed “HOYLE’S GAMES” along with various gaming and sporting implements in a gold gilt style finish. The reverse cover is the same as the front, with similar minor corner wear and a light scratch across the upper quarter. All pages are free of tears. The first pages show some very minor brown spotting that does not detract from the readability or character of the book.
The second blank leaf features a pencil inscription which reads, “A.A. Mandill Hyde Park Mass.”.
The book measures 4.6” x 3.2”.
Hoyle’s Games Book was an authoritative and popular guide to the most prolific forms of entertainment from the late 1700’s through the Civil War period. Many copies could be found in family parlors and military camps, making this a wonderful period collectible. [cm][ph:L]
