CIVIL WAR U.S. CHRISTIAN COMMISSION SOLDIER’S TRACT

Titled “THE DEBT IS PAID,” this inspirational 11-page booklet, containing the story of a poor woman named Betty, is paper bound with prominent front and back covers printed in red. The front cover carries the publication information: “American Baptist Publication Society, 530 Arch Street, Philadelphia.” The back cover, also in red with floral border, reads in large letters, “Presented by the United States Christian Commission.”

The USCC operated alongside the Sanitary Commission to augment government furnished medical aid and supplies, as well as provide social services, recreational activity, and religious inspiration and support. Organized in 1861 after First Bull Run, the organization at least in the field was male-dominated but women found their way to the front and military hospitals, forming a “Ladies Christian Commission” in 1864.

This would be a good addition to a collection of the many religious and inspirational moral tracts handed out to soldiers during the war and sometimes found in their personal effects. It has some minor stains, but displays well. [sr] [ph:L]
