This little book is titled “THE SOLDIER’S POCKET BOOK: PREPARED FOR THE DEFENDERS OF THEIR COUNTRY” by the Presbyterian Board of Publication in Philadelphia in 1861.
Softcover booklet meas. approx. 3.25 x 4.75 inches and runs 64 pages.
Covers are stiff dark colored paper with embossed scroll decoration and “THE SOLDIER’S POCKET BOOK” in strong gold ink stamped on the front cover which shows minor light wear.
Binding is good. Pages have browned some with age.
Book contains prayers, hymns and Psalms.
Item comes with what looks to be its original paper envelope that is marked in pencil “1864 – SOLDIER’S POCKET BOOK OF GEO. S. THOMAS.” Also present is a slightly larger envelope with an ink inscription of “1864 SOLDIER’S POCKET BOOK (HYMNS) OF GEO. S. THOMAS (FATHER OF A. E. T.)”
