Valuable study of European armies, and their weapons, in the Crimean War by a distinguished U.S. Army ordnance officer. Sent to Europe by then Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, Major Mordecai produced this scholarly and influential study of European military science and ballistics on the eve of the American Civil War. Contents include military organizations of armies in the Crimean War, ordnance at the Siege of Sebastopol, arsenals, rifled cannon, cannon of larger caliber, garrison artillery, field artillery, spherical case shot, shell fuses, small arms, and much more.
Also included is a translation of Schon's “Rifled Infantry Arms” which compares firearms of various countries (Prussian tige rifles, Enfield rifles, etc.), the Thouvenin and Minie systems, etc. Original brown blind-stamped cloth. Moderately edge worn and rubbed with heavier wear to corners, chipping and small tears at head and base of spine. Binding remains firm. Contains many fold-out plates.
