The title of this book is “THE WITCHES OF NEW YORK” by Q. K. Philander Doesticks, P.B. and published by Rudd & Carleton of New York in 1859.

Hardcover book bound in red cloth with embossed decorations front and back with the title on the spine. Covers are very dirty, almost black from wear, handling and storage. Volume meas. approx. 5.00 x 7.00 inches and runs 405 pages.

Interior has a front signature that is starting to come loose while the back signature is good. Pages have become browned along the edges from age. Various pages have some pencil marks and the inside front cover has a small bookplate from a former owner.

The back of the first page has a Civil War period handwritten ink label that reads “DONATED TO THE 1ST DIVISION U.S. GENL. HOSPITAL CAMP DENNISON, O. BY RICKEY CARROLL & CO. 4TH ST CINCINNATI, OHIO.” Above the label is a period pencil notation of “NO. 19.”

In a more modern hand and ink at top of the same page is “A RARE RELIC OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. NO. 19 VOLUME DONATED TO THE 1ST DIVISION U.S. GENERAL HOSPITAL AT US ARMY CAMP DENNISON OHIO BY RICKEY CARROLL & CO. 4TH ST CINCINNATI OHIO.”

Camp Dennison was a military recruiting, training, and medical post for the United States Army during the Civil War. It was located near Cincinnati, Ohio, not far from the Ohio River. The camp was named for Cincinnati native William Dennison, Ohio's governor at the start of the war.    [ad] [ph:L]
