These four volumes detail the development, manufacture, distribution, and use of Civil War bullets and cartridges. Well over 1600 pages total in these books.

Part One covers the Federal musket ammunition; arsenals, smoothbore musket, rifle musket, and patented ammunition. Part Two, details Federal carbine ammunition. Part Three contains Federal revolver ammunition, and completes the northern half of the story with miscellaneous essays not covered prior. Part Four is the southern part of the story. A narrative of the four years of the Confederate Ordnance Bureau, Josiah Gorgas and John Mallet, and as in all volumes, many, many illustrations of the bullets and cartridges and associated items.
