1863 POCKET BIBLE WITH INSCRIPTION AND POSSIBLE CIVILIAN ID

$65.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2023-1557

Very nice leather-bound pocket testament containing both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.

Leather cover is in excellent used condition. Its surface shows some scattered surface dirt with a functioning flap and keeper. There is one very small chip at top of the spine and the upper spine has “BIBLE” in gold ink and gothic script. Page edges have a worn gilt finish.

Interior is nice with a good binding and pages that show only light discoloration from age. Title page shows that the Bible was printed by the American Bible Society in 1863.

The inside front cover has a period ink inscription that reads “PRESENTED TO EMELINE LOUISA HART BY HER GRANDMOTHER.”

The 1850 census shows two women named Emeline L. Hart. One resided in Brewer, Maine and was 21 in 1850 while the other lived in Lysander, New York and was 12 years old. More research would be needed to determine which woman was the owner.

This would make a nice addition to any 19th Century religious display or could even be used in a Civil War soldier display.  [ad] [ph:L]
