This unit was organized at Indianapolis., IN, 9/16/1861. Attached to initially to George Thomas’s command, the 33rd was assigned to the Army of the Ohio, serving in the west, and later attached to the Army of the Cumberland. Most of the regiment was captured at the Battle of Thompson Station, TN, by General Dorn’s forces, March 4-5, 1863, and exchanged two months later. It participated in the summer ’63 Tullahoma Campaign, and in early 1864 was assigned to the 20th Corps during in the Atlanta Campaign, staying with “Uncle Billy’s” Army through the march to the Sea and through the Carolinas; culminating in the Battle of Bentonville and Johnston’s surrender at the Battle of Bentonville, NC, 4/26/1865. Following the Grand Review, the 33rd was mustered out in Louisville, KY. During service it lost 116 men killed and mortally wounded and 182 to disease for a total of 298.
