The full title of this volume is “HISTORY OF THE SEVENTH PENNSYLVANIA VETERAN VOLUNTEER CAVALRY; ITS RECORD, REMINISCENCES AND ROSTER WITH APPENDIX.”

The author is William B. Sipes who was a lieutenant-colonel of the regiment. The book was published in Pennsylvania in 1905.

Volume is hardcover and meas. approx. 6.00 x 9.25 inches. The history runs 169 pages while the appendix runs another 143 pages. The volume also has numerous black & white portraits, both wartime and post-war, of some of the members.

Covers are maroon with black horizontal stripes at top and bottom with the title embossed in strong gold with a cavalry scene on the front. Both front and back covers show very light wear. Front and back endpapers have been replaced. Binding is excellent. Title is in also in worn gold on the spine.

Tucked inside the book is an undated, neatly written three-page letter by the nephew of Lieutenant-Colonel Sipes to his mother. After discussing certain trifles, he mentions attending a reunion of the regiment at which he was called upon to make a brief speech. He relates to his mother how “Uncle Will” was well thought of by the veterans. He mentions that all the copies of the unit history were given only to veterans but the treasurer of the association promised to try and get him one. The copy offered here is no doubt the book discussed in the letter.

Also with the book is a printed flyer listing the agenda for the reunion discussed in the letter. It was the 32nd Annual Reunion of the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry held in Pittsburgh on October 19, 1909. Flyer has two faint horizontal fold lines and some minor edge chipping.

The 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry was organized in October of 1861 and served in 88 battles and skirmishes to include Lebanon, Murfreesboro, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, Big Shanty, Dallas, Atlanta, Lovejoy Station, and Selma. During the war the regiment lost in killed, died of wounds and died of disease 13 officers and 279 enlisted men.  [AD] [PH:L]
