During the Civil War the state of Indiana provided 208, 367 soldiers and 2,130 sailors to the Union cause--of whom 24, 416 were killed and 48, 568 wounded in service. On the army side, the state contributed 129 Infantry units, 13 cavalry, 1 cavalry company, 1 regiment of Heavy Artillery and 26 light artillery batteries. Nearly all of these were posted to the western theatre, though some surfaced in east, with a half dozen present at the Battle of Gettysburg— [3rd Indiana Cavalry, 7th-14th-19th - 20th- and 27th Infantry].

Originally a three month regiment assigned to the department of West Virginia during the summer of 1861, in September The 6th Indiana was re-organized and mustered at Madison, IN. Dispatched to Louisville, KY, the unit was attached to the Army of the Ohio before being reassigned to the Army of the Cumberland with whom it served through the remainder of the war. Battle and Campaign activities: 1862--Shiloh, Siege of Corinth, MI, Pursuit of Bragg into Kentucky, Stone’s River. 1863—Stone’s River [Jan.], Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge. 1864—Atlanta Campaign, Siege of Atlanta. Mustered out September 1864, w/veteran volunteers transferred to the 68th Indiana Infy, which joined in the pursuit of Hood’s army and participated in the victorious Battle of Nashville [Dec. 1864], which effectively smashed Confederate resistance in the West. During service the 6th Indiana lost 125 men killed and mortally wounded and 142 to disease for a total of 267. Solid regiment, solid Indiana collectible.
