By H.P. Moyer, Sowers Printing Co., Lebanon, PA, 1911. 472pp, ills., regimental roster. Blue glazed cloth, measuring 9.5 x6.5”, with gilt cover & spine lettering. Exhibits slight water staining of lower right corner text. Else near pristine.
Organized as the 162nd PA Volunteers in Harrisburg in the fall of 1862, the unit became the 17th PA Cavalry soon after and was transferred to the Cavalry Brigade , 11th Corps, with which it served through April 1863. Reassigned to Gen. John Buford’s 1st Division cavalry, the unit served with Devin’s 2nd Brigade during the famed first day’s fight at the Battle of Gettysburg. The regiment participated from there on in all the Cavalry actions of the Army of the Potomac through the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. During service it lost 104 men killed or mortally wounded [unusually high for a Cavalry regiment] and 128 by disease for a total of 232.
Solid history of one Buford’s hard fighting Gettysburg regiments. Excellent collectible.
