US 8 INCH MORTAR BALL FROM ISLAND #10

$275.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 37-254

Totally inert 8-inch mortar shell minus the fuse. “Ears” are present on both sides of the fuse hole. Body is in good condition with only light discoloration from ground action. Small area of moderate rust below one ear and at bottom. This is nothing serious and can be cleaned.

Shell was recovered from Island #10 along the Mississippi River. This Confederate stronghold fell to the Union forces commanded by Gen. John Pope in April of 1862. The capture of this important post not only helped to open the Mississippi but it also caused Pope’s star to rise leading eventually to his command of the Union Army at 2nd Bull Run.

Due to the weight of the shell extra shipping may be required.
