This is one of several scarce British artillery crates that recently came to hand, some of which were marked “Quebec.” This is clearly stenciled in black on one end: “11/59” / “W[broad arrow]D” / BOXERS DIAPHm / SHRAPNl SHELLS. There is an additional stenciled line along the end of the bottom board that appears to read “? Pr GUN /58 …” followed by some fainter markings. The board itself was also stamped “T[?] A B [broad arrow] O.” We take the last three characters to be Board of Ordnance. The “58” after “GUN” in the lower stenciled line may refer to an 1858 pattern rifled gun, and might be deciphered with a black light. In any case, the markings clearly indicate the contents of the crate were artillery case shot of Shrapnel’s design, which included bullets to add to the lethality of shell fragments from the bursting of an artillery shell, which was subsequently improved by Boxer, who kept the bursting charge separate from the bullets or shot inside the shell, avoiding duds and premature explosions, and also thinned the walls of the shell in places and added a bursting charge contained by an iron diaphragm, so as to more narrowly focus the dispersion of the shot when the charge went off.
The crate is 27 ¾” long, 10 ¼” wide, and 6” high. The top is mismatched, coming from a different crate, but still displays well when left open, and any artillery crate like this is rare. [sr][ph:m]
