A standard implement with every artillery piece, this rare, Civil War-era artillery gunner’s lanyard has survived the years in excellent condition. The iron hook at the end of the hemp lanyard was attached to the ring of the friction primer set in the breech of the gun tube, and the full length of cord allowed the gunner to stand clear of the recoil path when the gun was fired.

The turned cylindrical wooden handle measures 4 ½" long and 1” in diameter at the ends.  The hemp cord – or “cod line” as it was named in the 1863 Ordnance Manual – appears full length. The original iron hook is intact on the end of the cord.

This unique example does not have the cord wound completely around the handle per regulations. This appears the product of an artilleryman with plenty of time on his hands. Here the rope has been coiled upon itself nearly the whole length. Very interesting.

This lanyard is in excellent condition and quite different and will be a very nice addition to your Civil War collection. [jet][ph:L]
