This shell gauge still has its wood handle with brass ferrule and is clearly marked on the base of the ring: “ORD. DEPT. U.S. N.Y.W. / 1867 / G.B. / [anchor]” on one side, and “STANDARD / SMALL SHELL GAUGE / 5.64” on the other. The handle and ferrule show some dings and scratches, but the gauge is very good overall.
These come in a number of sizes and provided a quick check for the size of artillery projectiles, something very useful, given the large piles of shells and shot visible in some period photographs of ordnance yards, and rather critical to gun crews. [SR][ph:L]
