CIVIL WAR INFANTRY FROCK COAT IDENTIFIED TO 12TH NEW JERSEY SOLDIER KIA COLD HARBOR

Item Code: 1179-153

This is a nice example of the U.S. regulation enlisted man’s frock coat for infantry.

The coat is the regulation frock with nine-button front, two-button cuffs, and two buttons on the rear waist. The functional cuffs are still piped in blue (faded), the color for infantry. The piping around the collar is gone. The body is dark blue wool, lined in the chest and shoulders, with white sleeve linings. No lining on the back or the tails. Two pockets are in the tails and one in the left breast. The skirts are hemmed. The buttons are the correct general service eagle buttons. Only the “eye” remains of the “hook & eye” at the collar bottom.

The condition is overall good, but well worn. The exterior remains in nice condition other than scattered small moth holes. There is one area of larger moth damage found in the center, back. Several seams had separated and have been somewhat restored. The coat remains very displayable.

The inside of the coat shows hard use and wear. The collar, shoulders, and arm pits have heavy wear and seam separations. The right sleeve lining is completely separated at the shoulder. Many of the seam separations have been unprofessionally restitched. The left sleeve lining has “L. S. Land” written in ink at the shoulder. This is slightly worn and appears absolutely original. The inside breast pocket has a small bone button closure. Upon this pocket is a faded inscription, “Worn by Lorenzo Land, Co. G, 12th NJ. Killed on June 3, 1864” with additional text below that is very hard to decipher. Looks to be, “He [??] [??] Enemy So Is A Patriot”.

Private Lorenzo S. Land was born in 1839 and was a farmer in Millville, NJ. He enlisted into Company G, 12th New Jersey infantry on August 12, 1862. He was present with the regiment through all its engagements and was killed in action on June 3, 1864 during a charge at Cold Harbor. He is buried in the Cold Harbor National Cemetery, Mechanicsburg, Virginia.

Lorenzo’s older brother, George, joined the 10th New Jersey and died in a hospital in Washington, DC, on October 12, 1862 of syphilis.

A well worn but honest 9-button infantry frock coat worn by a soldier KIA at Cold Harbor. [jet] [ph:L]
