US ENLISTED MAN’S BELT WITH ID TO OHIO SOLDIER WOUNDED AT WINCHESTER

$795.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2022-945

Used leather waist belt in good pliable condition complete with the brass keeper and Pattern 1839 oval US belt plate.

The leather has very little original finish left but is still strong and has four adjustment holes.

The brass keeper and plate have a matching mellow patina. The face of the plate has a strong US stamping and is free from scratches. The reverse has 100% of the lead fill, both arrow hooks and tongue.

A close inspection of the lead reveals the following “S K M CO. C 23 OVI.”

A search of the records shows that the belt belonged to Stephen K. Minshall who was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and enlisted as a private in Company C, 12th Ohio Infantry on June 19, 1861. He served with that regiment until July 1, 1864 when he was transferred to Company C, 23rd Ohio Infantry. He was wounded in the left forearm at Winchester on July 24, 1864 and was mustered out at Cumberland, Maryland on July 26, 1865.

During his service the 12th was engaged at 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam and Cloyd’s Mountain. While with the 23rd it was engaged at Winchester where Minshall was wounded to an undetermined degree, Opequan, Fishers Hill, 3rd Winchester and Cedar Creek.

After the war, Minshall lived in Dayton and in 1890 he entered the Dayton Home for Disabled Soldiers. He died there on March 20, 1902 and is buried in Dayton National Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio.  [ad] [ph:L]
