This pair of very clear tintypes is housed in a thermoplastic double case. On the left is a soldier in gray frock coat with brass buttons, seated arm-in-arm with a woman wearing a shawl who is certainly his wife. Both have their cheeks delicately tinted and his buttons, her brooch, and both their rings have been highlighted in gold. At right is a seated man, younger, elbow on table, wearing a hat, holding a large book, and displaying a watchchain the photographer has tinted gold also. As with the couple, his cheeks are lightly tinted red. The couple have adopted emotionless expressions as best they can, appropriate to a serious portrait. The younger man is tight-lipped, but with a smile. His coat and vest are light colored, but we see nothing specifically military about it. The older man in the left image, however, is certainly wearing a military frock coat. No names are preserved, but it certainly looks like the parents at left and a son at right.
Both images are matted, glassed and framed. The case is very good and shows a hanging basket of flowers framed by floral scrolls both front and back. [sr] [ph:L]
