A group in very nice condition containing a carbine cartridge box, a revolver cartridge box, and an NCO sword belt rig, all from same maker.

Buff leather belt and all straps are in very good condition and remain pliable.  Brown buff exterior with white buff underside.  Maker’s stamp “W. KINSEY / NEWARK, N.J.” and a pen & ink soldier’s name “N.E. COOK / 1^ST SART” are both found on white underside of belt. All brass rings, studs, and hooks remain in place on the belt, shoulder sling, and sword straps. The rectangular eagle NCO plate features the applied silver wreath. The buckle and keeper have matching bench numbers.

Revolver cartridge box with clean leather and tight seams. Outer flap shows some cracking to the finish, mostly at “hinge” and along lower edge. Some finish loss at lower edge. Latch tab is complete and held in place with by a rivet and stitching. The interior of the box is very good. The maker’s name, “W. KINSEY & CO / NEWARK-N.J.” is strongly stamped.  Belt loops on back also remain in very good shape.  These are stitched and riveted. Brass finial is present on bottom.

The carbine cartridge box also features clean leather and tight seams. Outer flap shows no cracking or crazing. Latch tab is complete and held in place with by a rivet and stitching. The interior of the box is very good. The inner flap has the maker’s name, “W. KINSEY & CO / NEWARK-N.J.” (same maker for all three pieces).  Both “ears” remain well stitched to the inner flap. The small implement pouch sewn to the front of the box is complete and likewise in great condition. The wood cartridge block (with 20 holes) remains in place. Bottom of box has a brass finial and both black japanned roller buckles. On the box’s back side there remains two of the vertical, leather belt loops with a single horizontal leather strip. All stitching remains strong and tight. A very nice carbine cartridge box.

The name could be one of several “N. Cook” soldiers listed in the Civil War database but further time and research needs to be done to determine which was the true original owner.

Overall a very nice condition set of Civil War leather cavalry accoutrements.    [jet] [ph:L]
