This is the “high brass sabot” or “ratcheted sabot” style of Parrott projectile. This specimen is non-excavated and remains in excellent condition. What appears to be original arsenal paint (black) remains on majority of shell body. A beautiful zinc Parrott fuse adaptor is screwed into the nose. This fuse still unscrews. This is a 10-pounder and stands approximately 8 ¾” tall.
The brass sabot was cast around the base of the projectile, which had six ratchets. The purpose of these was to keep the sabot from slipping while the propellant charge forced the sabot into the grooves of the rifle. Robert Parrott patented this projectile's sabot construction on August 20, 1861, patent #33,099. [jet]
