Tin box meas. approx. 4.25 inches long x 2 .75 inches wide x 2.50 inches high with a lid that is embossed with crossed cannons with a bursting bomb at center. Above this is some lettering that is too faint to read.
Inside the box is a single unused friction primer and a modern note that reads “A RELIC OF THE CIVILWAR CARIED BY OUR UNCLE HENRY OF FT. MADISON AND SERVED AS THE FAMILY BUTTON BOX FOR YEARS. THOUGHT YOU MIGHT GET A ‘BANG’ OUT OF HAVING IT. WILL HOLD SCREWS AND THE LIKE VERY NICELY. MELA.”
Item shows surface dirt and light wear from age and use but is an interesting little souvenir of the war.
Iowa only fielded four light artillery batteries so “uncle Henry” must have served in one of them. [ad]
