Constructed as a spiked double spiral, this iron worm head would be used on a wood shaft to extract debris from the base of a cannon barrel. Remnants of the cloth bags used to hold the powder charge could impede loading or ignition of the following round and a smoldering piece could prematurely ignite a charge, to the cost of the gun crew. Measuring 4 3/8 inches in diameter, this one would fit a twelve-pounder field gun or pieces of larger caliber. This is in very good condition with an old coating of black paint to inhibit rust. [sr]
