This artifact is a fine condition specimen of an arsenal-marked, Union artillery gunner’s firing implement. Known as the “gunner’s level” this brass device was utilized by Federal military and naval gunners for sighting the artillery piece.
Constructed of heavy brass, this tool bears the crisp maker’s markings of “[Eagle motif] / U.S. / WATERVLIET / ARSENAL / 1863”. The device is approximately 6 ¼” wide at the base 6 ¼” tall. Each of the two “legs” has a ¾” long cylindrical “foot” attached to it. A “spirit level” is mounted on the front, as well as a sliding steel pointer. Original glass spirit level must have been broken and has been replaced. All brass has light patina from handling.
A fine Civil War dated, arsenal-marked, brass gunner’s level to complement any artillery collection. [jet]
