This is a Civil War artillery gimlet which was used to remove broken friction primers or other obstructions from the vent hole of a cannon tube.

Wood handle retains much of its original finish with no cracks. Iron shaft is still tightly attached to handle and has a dark patina. Threads are good. Measures 4 ½” long. Handle measures 2 ½” wide.   [sm]
