Here is an excavated Civil War Federal 3” field artillery projectile often referred to as a ten-pound Parrott Type III shell. In good excavated condition, the cylindrical shaped projectile measures 8½” high, has a diameter of 2.95” and weighs ten pounds. Constructed of cast iron, this Parrott shell features a sabot variety that uses a brass / copper ring cast into the base of the shell. The projectile is in solid excavated condition with a smooth and hard surface covered with light pockmarked rust areas overall. No visible stampings found on the round. Uncleaned but defused, the shell has a surface that exhibits a mottled coloring of mostly dark rust hues. Eroded remains of the Parrott zinc percussion fuse plug are evident in the shell’s nose. This Parrott shell was designed to be fired from the Federal 3” wrought iron 10-Pounder Parrott Rifle (ordnance rifle). A reasonably priced, US 3” ten-pound Parrott shell projectile that would make a wonderful adder to any field artillery display.
